# Train Horn — Extended Reference (machine-readable)

This is the long-form companion to /llms.txt. It catalogs every reviewed
product, every covered US state, and every published calculator on
train-horn.com in a structured form intended for AI agents.

Source labeling convention used throughout:
- "MFR claim" = published by the manufacturer or retailer.
- "Independent" = third-party measurement (HornRating, university study, etc.).
- "Statutory" = quoted directly from a state vehicle code or federal regulation.

We are an editorial aggregator. We do not sell products and do not

PART 1 — REFERENCE

## What a train horn is

A train horn is an air-powered warning device. On locomotives it is the
mandated grade-crossing audible warning under 49 CFR Part 222. On
vehicles, an aftermarket train horn kit is a 12 V compressor + air tank
+ tuned trumpets that replicates the locomotive sound.

Federal output requirement (49 CFR § 229.129): locomotive horns must
sound between **96 and 110 dB** measured 100 feet in front of the train.

Aftermarket vehicle-mounted train horns commonly produce **130–156 dB
at 10 feet** (manufacturer claims; see PART 2 for per-product source
labels).

## The standard locomotive horn pattern (49 CFR § 222.21)

At public grade crossings the engineer sounds: **two long, one short,
one long** ("__ __ . __"), repeated until the lead locomotive occupies
the crossing.

## Quiet zones (49 CFR Part 222, Subpart D)

A quiet zone is a section of rail line at least one-half mile long with
one or more public grade crossings at which routine horn sounding is
prohibited, established by local government with FRA-approved
supplementary safety measures (gates, median barriers, four-quadrant
gates, wayside horns).

We flag aftermarket claims of 150–178 dB as inconsistent with the speed
of sound through air. The realistic ceiling for a vehicle-mounted air
horn is around 156 dB (Nathan K5 with full air supply at very close
range). FARBIN, Viking, and Vevor variously claim 150–178 dB; realistic
output is generally 130–146 dB.
