On a Class 8 truck, all of it already exists. Per the California commercial driver handbook, the compressor governor on an air-braked truck cuts in around 100 PSI and cuts out around 125 PSI — squarely inside the operating range of nearly every aftermarket train horn. Your shopping list shrinks to:

  • The horn itself (trumpets, mounting bracket)
  • An electric solenoid valve (often included with truck-market horns)
  • A pressure protection valve — the one safety part you must not skip
  • Air line, fittings, a fused switch, and wire

Know Your Air System Before You Touch It

The air that will feed your horn is the same air that releases your spring brakes and applies your service brakes, so it pays to know the plumbing. A typical tractor runs a supply (wet) tank fed directly by the compressor, then primary and secondary reservoirs that feed the rear and front brake circuits. The commercial driver handbook notes that air-brake vehicles must have a check valve between the compressor and the first reservoir — air can flow forward into the tanks, but a leak at the compressor can’t drain them backward.

The Non-Negotiable Part: a Pressure Protection Valve

A pressure protection valve (PPV) is a spring-loaded valve that sits between your air tap and the horn circuit. Its job is plain: isolate auxiliary air accessories from the brake system so a leak in the accessory can’t bleed down your brake supply. Common truck-market PPVs close the auxiliary circuit when tank pressure falls to about 55 PSI and reopen once the system builds back to about 65 PSI.

Plumb the PPV directly at the tank fitting, before anything else in the horn circuit. If a trumpet diaphragm sticks, a line chafes through, or the solenoid weeps, the valve slams shut long before your gauges reach the low-air warning zone — the failure costs you a horn, not your brakes.

  • Tap the supply (wet) tank or an unused accessory port, not a brake service line

The 150 PSI Fine Print

Most flagship horn ratings are measured at 150 PSI — pressure your truck never reaches, because the governor cuts out around 125 and the relief valve caps the system at 150. A horn rated at 150 PSI will still be extremely loud at 120–125 PSI, just a step below its advertised number, and horns rated across a lower band (like the Grand General’s 70–140+ PSI) give up nothing at truck pressure. Install Overview: Tapping the Tank

Truck outfitter 4 State Trucks lists the popular mounting spots as under the catwalk/deck plate, behind the sleeper, or at the back of the frame — anywhere the trumpets can face forward or down with room to drain.   1. Disconnect the batteries and drain the air system so you’re not working against 125 PSI.
  2. Mount the horn with the trumpets angled slightly down so water can’t pool in the bells.
  3. Install the pressure protection valve at the supply-tank port (or a tee in the supply line).
  4. Run air line from the PPV to the solenoid valve at the horn; keep it clear of exhaust and moving suspension parts.
  5. Wire the solenoid through a fused switch or a relay off your existing horn circuit.
  6. Rebuild air pressure, soap-test every fitting for leaks, and test the horn — briefly, and not in the yard at 5:00 AM.

Don’t Out-Honk Your Brakes
