Jeep Wrangler JL install

How to Install a Train Horn on a Jeep Wrangler JL (2018–2026)

Train horn install for Jeep Wrangler JL — Wrango bolt-on bracket, underbody chassis mounting, engine bay alternative, OEM horn fuse-tap wiring, JLU vs JL fitment.

White Jeep Wrangler — Wrangler JL install context

The Jeep Wrangler JL (2018–2026) doesn’t have an under-bed spare tire well like a pickup — the spare hangs on the rear tailgate, and the underbody is busy with skid plates, transfer-case linkages, and the rear axle. Train horn installs on a JL therefore use either a dedicated underbody chassis bracket (HornBlasters’ Wrango JLU bracket is the leading option) or an engine-bay mount near the battery tray. Mount choice depends on whether you want the horn out of sight or accessible for service.

Quick stats

  • Difficulty: Moderate. Some drilling required even with the Wrango bracket; underbody work means you’re under the vehicle, ideally on a lift or with the front lifted on jack stands.
  • Time: 4–5 hours with the HornBlasters Wrango JLU bracket; 6–8 hours for a custom underbody install.
  • Cost: $1,200–$1,500 entry kits; up to $5,000+ for a full HornBlasters Shocker XL or Nathan AirChime K5LA install.
  • Tools: Socket set, drill, wire crimpers, multimeter, MICRO2 add-a-circuit adapter.
  • Best mount option for most builds: Underbody chassis with the Wrango JLU bracket. Keeps the horn invisible from above and protected by the skid plate geometry.

Mounting options for the JL platform

The JL has three viable mount strategies, each with trade-offs:

HornBlasters offers a Wrango JLU Horn Kit and bracket specifically engineered for the 2018–2020 JLU V6 4-door 4WD with mild lift. The bracket bolts to the underside of the chassis with some drilling required. Trumpets project rearward and downward, protected by the skid plates from road debris.

Compatibility caveats (per the HornBlasters product page and JLwranglerforums.com discussions):

  • Engineered for V6 4WD JLU (4-door); 2-door JL fitment is less direct
  • May not fit 2021+ JLU models cleanly (post-MMR refresh changed underbody geometry)
  • Doesn’t work on the 4xe plug-in hybrid or the 392 V8 trim due to driveline / battery placement differences

For the older JK platform see our Wrangler JK install guide.

Engine-bay battery-tray mount

Per Wranglerforum.com discussions, JL builders sometimes mount the trumpets in the engine compartment near the battery tray, facing down. The sound bounces off the ground for projection. Tank and compressor go elsewhere (rear cubby, custom underbody bracket).

Pros: Easier access for service, no underbody drilling. Cons: Engine bay heat exposure, takes battery-tray real estate, may require relocating the secondary battery on diesel or electrified trims.

Rear cubby + dual-mount

Tanks fit into the rear cubby behind the back seat (JLU only — JL 2-door doesn’t have the same cubby space), with the compressor under the vehicle and trumpets either underbody or near a fender. Common on heavy modification builds where wiring is already extensive.

Three kits ordered by price tier:

  1. HornBlasters Wrango JLU Horn Kit — Bolt-on for 2018–2020 JLU V6 4WD (HornBlasters product page). Includes the Wrango bracket plus a Shocker-class horn package. The most engineered solution for the platform.
  2. HornBlasters Conductor’s Special 228H — $649.99–$749.99. 147.7 dB Shocker XL trumpets, compact 2-gallon tank that fits underbody on JLU.
  3. Nathan AirChime K5LA Kit — $4,999.99–$5,199.99. The 38 lb K5LA is heavy for a Wrangler underbody; verify your specific JL build can support the weight before committing.

For portable / no-install alternatives see Milwaukee M18 and DeWalt 20V MAX hubs.

Step-by-step (Wrango JLU bracket on a 2018–2020 JLU)

This sequence assumes a 2018–2020 Jeep Wrangler JLU V6 4WD with the HornBlasters Wrango JLU bracket and a Shocker XL or 5-gallon Conductor’s Special 544 air system. Total time: 4–5 hours.

  1. Disconnect battery negative terminal.
  2. Lift the front of the Jeep on jack stands (or use a lift). Underbody work is much easier with proper clearance.
  3. Remove any underbody panels or skid plates in the way of the chassis section where the bracket will mount. Some Rubicon trim levels have full-belly skids that need partial removal.
  4. Test-fit the Wrango JLU bracket against the underside chassis. Mark holes that need to be drilled per HornBlasters’ instructions.
  5. Drill marked holes and bolt the bracket to the chassis. Torque per the included instructions.
  6. Mount the train horn to the bracket using the supplied U-bolts or clamps. Trumpets pointing rearward and slightly down.
  7. Mount the air tank — for a 5-gallon Conductor’s Special 544, the tank often goes in the rear cubby (JLU only) with airline running forward; for a 2-gallon Conductor’s 228H it can mount within the Wrango bracket envelope.
  8. Mount the compressor to the chassis or alongside the tank. Position to avoid exhaust heat.
  9. Run air lines from compressor → tank in port, tank out → solenoid valve → horn. 1/2″ PTC fittings.
  10. Run the compressor power wire (8 AWG positive + ground) from the engine bay battery. Inline 30 A fuse within 12″ of battery positive.
  11. Run the solenoid trigger wire (18 AWG) from the cab to the solenoid.
  12. Tap into the OEM horn fuse circuit (MICRO2 add-a-circuit method, see below).
  13. Ground the solenoid to the chassis on bare metal.
  14. Reconnect battery, prime the system (≈ 6:45 to fill 5-gallon tank from 0 → 150 PSI).
  15. Test fire the horn first by manually shorting the solenoid trigger to 12 V, then via the OEM steering wheel button.
  16. Reinstall any underbody panels removed in step 3.

Wiring to the steering wheel button

The JL’s OEM horn fuse lives in the under-hood Power Distribution Center. The MICRO2 add-a-circuit method is the same as on F-150, Ram 1500, and Silverado.

  1. With battery disconnected, locate the horn fuse in the engine bay PDC. Reference the PDC cover diagram for your year and trim — the fuse position is labeled.
  2. Remove the original horn fuse using a fuse puller.
  3. Insert a MICRO2 add-a-circuit adapter with the original fuse on the interior terminals.
  4. Insert a 10 A MICRO2 fuse on the exterior terminals.
  5. Crimp 18 AWG wire to the adapter’s pigtail and route through the firewall to the solenoid.
  6. Ground the solenoid’s negative terminal to the chassis.
  7. (Optional) Splice a cab-mounted toggle for arm/disarm override.
  8. Reconnect battery, press steering wheel horn button — both OEM horn and train horn fire together.

Common problems

Distilled from JLwranglerforums.com, JKOwners.com, and Wranglerforum.com:

  1. Wrango bracket fits “with mild lift” only. A bone-stock JL on factory tires may have clearance issues; verify lift requirements before ordering. The bracket is engineered around the assumption of at least a small suspension lift.
  2. 2021+ MMR JLU geometry differences. HornBlasters notes the bracket works on 2018–2020 JLU but compatibility is uncertain for the 2021+ MMR (mid-cycle refresh) models. Ask HornBlasters before ordering for a 2021+ year.
  3. 4xe plug-in hybrid battery placement. The 4xe’s high-voltage battery occupies space the Wrango bracket would otherwise use. Engine-bay or rear-cubby alternative mounting required.
  4. 2-door JL fitment. The Wrango JLU bracket is engineered for the 4-door JLU. 2-door JL builders typically fabricate custom mounts or use universal underbody brackets.
  5. OEM horn stops working after fuse-tap. MICRO2 adapter inserted backwards. Original fuse on interior terminals; new 10 A trigger fuse on exterior terminals.
  6. Reversed compressor polarity. Symptom: motor grinds. Fix: swap +/− compressor leads.
  7. Trail vibration loosens fittings. Wranglers see more chassis flex than pickups. Use thread-locker on all NPT fittings and re-check tightness after the first off-road outing.

A train horn install on a Wrangler JL is legal in most U.S. states for the horn hardware itself, but using it on a public road typically violates state vehicle codes. Off-road use (where a Wrangler thrives) is broadly unrestricted. See the legal hub and state legality lookup.
