How to Install a Train Horn on a Ram 3500 (2013–2026)
Train horn install for Ram 3500 1-ton — Cummins HD frame mounting, dual-rear-wheel clearance notes, dual-battery wiring, MICRO2 fuse-tap to OEM horn signal.
The Ram 3500 1-ton shares its chassis architecture with the Ram 2500 HD but adds dual-rear-wheel (DRW) configurations on most trims. The DRW track widens the rear, which slightly affects spare-tire-area access but doesn’t materially change the train-horn install procedure. This guide is a delta from the Ram 2500 and Ram 1500 install pages — read those first for the full procedure.
- Difficulty
- Moderate
- HD spare + DRW access
- Time
- 3–4 hr (kit-style)
- 6–8 hr custom fab
- Cost
- $1,000–$5,500
- Kit + mount + parts
- Best mount
- Spare tire well
- Or outside passenger frame
- Engine option
- HEMI 6.4L / Cummins 6.7L HO
- Cummins is most common on 3500
- Air system
- 5–8 gal tank
- XD-844K dual compressor recommended
What’s different from the Ram 2500
The 3500-specific considerations:
- Dual-rear-wheel (DRW) clearance. On DRW trims, the rear track is wider but the spare tire envelope is the same width. Your install in the spare-tire location is unaffected; air-line routing past the rear axle has more options because of the wider chassis.
- Cummins 6.7L High Output. The 3500 is the most common platform for the Cummins HO engine, which has slightly different exhaust routing than the standard 6.7L on the 2500. Same heat-shield concerns apply; verify the catalytic converter / DPF position vs your bracket.
- Heavier OEM spare. The 3500’s full-size spare (often LT-rated) is the heaviest of any Ram pickup. Use a floor jack.
- Towing-package wiring. 3500s with the factory 5th-wheel / gooseneck towing prep have additional electrical accessories near the spare tire location. Verify clearance before mounting.
- Greater air-system demands. If your use case includes 5+ second sustained blasts (worth-it on a 1-ton), consider the HornBlasters XD-844K kit with dual compressors and 8-gallon tank instead of the 5-gallon HD-544K.
For the basic install procedure (lowering spare, bracket mount, air-line routing, MICRO2 fuse-tap), follow the Ram 1500 install guide and Ram 2500 install guide.
Recommended kits
Three kits for the 3500 specifically:
- HornBlasters Conductor’s Special 228H — $649.99–$749.99. Compact 2-gallon system fits inside the larger 3500 spare-tire envelope with room to spare.
- HornBlasters Shocker XL Kit (XD-844K with dual compressors) — $2,000+. The 8-gallon tank gives 8–10 sec sustained blasts that match the 3500’s heavier-duty intent.
- HornBlasters Nathan AirChime K5LA Kit (XD-844K) — $5,199.99. Real locomotive horn at the 149.4 dB ceiling. The 3500 chassis hosts this comfortably.
Common 3500-specific problems
Distilled from RamForum.com Cummins / 3500 threads:
- Cummins HO exhaust heat. The High Output emissions hardware runs hotter than the standard 6.7L. Heat-shield the compressor mount or relocate to driver’s-side frame rail.
- DRW air-line routing. Air lines crossing under the rear axle area on DRW trims have to clear both inner and outer wheel tracks. Use abrasion-resistant air line (rubber-jacketed) and clamp every 12″.
- Towing prep clearance. 3500s with factory gooseneck or 5th-wheel prep have additional crossmember hardware. Verify clearance before bracket installation.
- Floor-jack required for spare removal. The 3500 spare is heavier than the 2500’s. Don’t attempt to remove without supporting the tire.
- 8-gallon tank fill time. On a single-compressor kit, the 8-gallon tank takes ~10–11 minutes to fill from empty. Step up to dual compressors (XD-844K) or accept longer initial wait times.
For all other shared issues see the Ram 2500 common-problems list.
Legal reminder
A train horn install on a Ram 3500 is legal in most U.S. states for the horn hardware itself, but using it on a public road typically violates state vehicle codes. See the legal hub and state legality lookup.
