How to Install a Train Horn on a Ram 3500 (2013–2026)

The Ram 3500 1-ton shares its chassis architecture with the Ram 2500 HD but adds dual-rear-wheel (DRW) configurations on most trims. The DRW track widens the rear, which slightly affects spare-tire-area access but doesn’t materially change the train-horn install procedure. What’s different from the Ram 2500

The 3500-specific considerations:

• Dual-rear-wheel (DRW) clearance. On DRW trims, the rear track is wider but the spare tire envelope is the same width. Your install in the spare-tire location is unaffected; air-line routing past the rear axle has more options because of the wider chassis.
• Cummins 6.7L High Output. The 3500 is the most common platform for the Cummins HO engine, which has slightly different exhaust routing than the standard 6.7L on the 2500. Same heat-shield concerns apply; verify the catalytic converter / DPF position vs your bracket.
• Heavier OEM spare. The 3500’s full-size spare (often LT-rated) is the heaviest of any Ram pickup. Use a floor jack.
• Towing-package wiring. 3500s with the factory 5th-wheel / gooseneck towing prep have additional electrical accessories near the spare tire location. Verify clearance before mounting.
• Greater air-system demands. If your use case includes 5+ second sustained blasts (worth-it on a 1-ton), consider the HornBlasters XD-844K kit with dual compressors and 8-gallon tank instead of the 5-gallon HD-544K.

Common 3500-specific problems

1. Cummins HO exhaust heat. The High Output emissions hardware runs hotter than the standard 6.7L. Heat-shield the compressor mount or relocate to driver’s-side frame rail.
2. DRW air-line routing. Air lines crossing under the rear axle area on DRW trims have to clear both inner and outer wheel tracks. Use abrasion-resistant air line (rubber-jacketed) and clamp every 12″.
3. Towing prep clearance. 3500s with factory gooseneck or 5th-wheel prep have additional crossmember hardware. Verify clearance before bracket installation.
4. Floor-jack required for spare removal. The 3500 spare is heavier than the 2500’s. Don’t attempt to remove without supporting the tire.
5. 8-gallon tank fill time. On a single-compressor kit, the 8-gallon tank takes ~10–11 minutes to fill from empty. Step up to dual compressors (XD-844K) or accept longer initial wait times.
