How to Install a Train Horn on a Toyota 4Runner
Train horn install for Toyota 4Runner — body-on-frame SUV mounting, frame-rail and rear cargo options, OEM horn fuse-tap, kit options for 5th gen and new 6th gen.
The Toyota 4Runner is Toyota’s body-on-frame mid-size SUV, mechanically related to the Tacoma but with an SUV body instead of a pickup bed. Like the Tacoma, the 4Runner has a generous spare tire well below the cargo area and a clean OEM horn fuse circuit. Train horn installs follow the same general pattern as the Tacoma and Tundra.
This page is a delta from the Toyota Tacoma install guide. Read that first for the base procedure.

- Kit + bracket + parts

What’s different from the Tacoma
- SUV body, not a pickup. No exposed bed; cargo area is enclosed.
- Spare tire under cargo floor. The 4Runner’s spare hangs underneath the cargo floor on a winch, similar to a pickup. Same spare-tire-delete approach as Tacoma.
- 3rd row seating optional. If your 4Runner has the third row, the rear cargo cubby may be tighter for tank mounting.
- Same OEM horn fuse architecture as Tacoma — MICRO2 add-a-circuit fuse-tap procedure is identical, follow the Tacoma install procedure.
- 6th gen (2025+) is fully redesigned. Aftermarket brackets engineered for 5th gen (2010–2024) don’t yet have confirmed fitment for the redesigned 6th gen.
Mounting options
- Spare tire location — universal STL bracket; Goliath-class brackets engineered for the Tacoma may fit the 4Runner with adaptation
- Behind front bumper — trumpets only, less common
- Frame rail under cargo area — alternative if the spare tire envelope is occupied
Recommended kits
- HornBlasters Conductor’s Special 228H — $649.99–$749.99. Compact 2-gallon system fits comfortably.
- HornBlasters Shocker XL Kit — $1,800–$2,200.
- HornBlasters Nathan AirChime K5LA Kit — $4,999.99–$5,199.99.
Step-by-step
Same procedure as the Tacoma install guide — disconnect battery, lower spare, remove winch, install bracket, mount horn + tank + compressor, run airline + electrical, MICRO2 fuse-tap to OEM horn, test fire.
Common 4Runner-specific problems
- 5th gen vs 6th gen bracket fitment. Pre-2025 brackets typically fit the 5th gen; 6th gen requires verification.
- TRD Pro / TRD Off-Road skid plate clearance. Higher trim levels have additional underbody armor.
- OEM horn fuse-tap issues identical to Tacoma.
- Rear cargo cubby tank vs third-row seat. If equipped with third row, tank position is constrained.
- Standard MICRO2 wiring problems as documented across Toyota install pages.
Legal reminder
Same as any aftermarket train horn — installation legal, road use restricted by state vehicle codes (typically 110 dB cap). See /legal/ and /tools/state-legality/.
