Every train horn kit needs a trigger, and the activation option you pick — horn button, toggle switch, factory steering-wheel button, or wireless remote — changes how the horn feels to live with every single day. Here’s how each one actually wires up, what it costs, and which setup fits which kind of build.
The four activation options at a glance
Before the kit goes in, decide how you want to blow it. Everything downstream of the switch (relay, compressor, tank, valve) stays the same — the trigger is just the low-current signal that opens the solenoid valve and dumps tank air through the trumpets.

Option 1: Momentary push button — the default for a reason
A momentary button works exactly like your steering-wheel horn pad: the circuit is closed only while your thumb is on it. Wire a fused 12V feed through the button to the solenoid valve’s positive wire, ground the valve’s other wire to the frame, and you’re done. - No cutting or splicing of factory wiring, so nothing to undo at trade-in time
- Train horn and stock horn stay fully independent — no accidental train-horn blast in a parking garage

Option 2: Toggle switch — an arm switch, not a horn trigger
A toggle latches: flip it on and it stays on. That makes it a poor primary horn trigger — the horn blows continuously until you flip it back — but a great kill switch. HornBlasters’ heavy-duty toggle (part SW-T, $6.99) is rated for 6 amps max and is designed to trip a 40-amp relay, which is exactly the role it should play: switching the low-current trigger side of the circuit, never the compressor’s full load.
In practice, the toggle earns its keep wired inline ahead of whatever main trigger you choose. Kid borrowing the truck? Valet parking? Option 3: Factory steering-wheel button — the full integration
This is the setup where pressing your stock horn pad fires the train horn. Per HornBlasters’ factory horn button integration guide, the wiring works like this:
- Locate the stock horn — on most modern vehicles it sits behind the front grille, ahead of or beside the radiator.
- Identify the positive wire at the horn. It’s usually the brighter-colored one (white, yellow, orange, green), but confirm with a voltage meter while a helper presses the horn pad.
- Splice a new wire off that positive using the scotchlok connector included in the kit’s wiring pack.
- Run the spliced wire to your inline toggle (the arm/kill switch), then on to the solenoid valve’s positive wire.
- Ground the valve’s second wire to the vehicle frame.
- Press the horn pad and listen for the valve’s audible click — that’s your confirmation the trigger circuit works before you ever air up the tank.
One thing to understand before you commit: a straight splice means both horns sound together every time you hit the wheel. Your only “quiet mode” is flipping the inline toggle off, which disarms the train horn and leaves the stock horn working normally. Option 4: SPDT relay — one button, two horns, pick your poison
If you want the steering wheel to fire either the stock horn or the train horn — but never both at once — you need a 5-pin SPDT (single-pole double-throw) relay in the stock horn circuit. HornBlasters publishes a wiring diagram for this but notes it does not supply the relay; you’ll need one rated at 10 amps minimum from an auto parts store.
The install: cut the stock horn’s positive wire about 6–8 inches from its connector, then land the wires on the relay like so.

With the toggle off, the wheel honks the polite stock horn. Flip the toggle and the same press of the wheel fires the train horn instead. Option 5: Wireless remote — the horn in your pocket
A wireless remote adds a key-fob transmitter and a small receiver box that switches the valve trigger circuit for you. Two mainstream options:
