Running a Train Horn Off Your Air Suspension Tank: Setup Guide

How to tee a train horn into an AccuAir, Air Lift, or Viair onboard-air tank: port sizes, 150 vs 200 PSI, regulators, valves, and what it does to ride height.

If your car or truck already rides on bags, running a train horn off your air suspension tank is the cheapest horn install there is: the compressor, tank, wiring, and pressure switch are already done, and the horn only needs a spare port, a valve, and a few feet of line. The catch is that AccuAir, Air Lift Performance, and Viair onboard-air setups often live at 200 PSI, while most train horns are happiest at 150, and every long blast pulls air the suspension was counting on. Here is how to tee in without choking the horn or dropping your ride height.

Why one tank can feed both

HornBlasters answers this one directly in its FAQ: if your system has a constant-duty compressor, it will have no issues running air bags as well as horns. The same FAQ adds the caveat that matters most for this guide: continuous horn use can deflate air suspension bags if the two share a tank, because the horn is dumping the same reserve the manifold uses to lift the car.

In a Train Horn Forums thread, an owner with a 2011 Mustang on an Air Lift system, a 5-gallon tank, dual Viair compressors, and eight ports asked whether a horn would work. The answers were unanimous that it would, with two pieces of advice: judge the tank by gallons, not PSI (at least 2 gallons for a train horn), and give the horn a 3/8” or 1/2” port rather than a small one.

Know your management system first

The three big names in the bagged-car world handle tank pressure differently, and that decides how much work the horn tap will be.

Details from the manufacturer pages that affect the tap:

  • Air Lift 3P ships at a 150 PSI tank setting; holding the up or down button on the controller cycles between 150 and 200 PSI. The kit runs 1/4” line, so measure the tank port threads before you assume a 1/2” valve will screw straight in.
  • AccuAir’s VU4 manifold is rated to 200 PSI with 1/4” NPT ports, lists at $549.95, and AccuAir notes your warranty may be voided without a water trap between the tank and the manifold inlet. The 3-gallon ENDO-VT sells for $361.25 through HornBlasters; AccuAir’s own site lists the 4-corner 5-gallon tank at $899.95.
  • Viair’s High-Flow kit rates the 480C at 100 percent duty at 100 PSI and 50 percent at 200 PSI. The kit lists at $358.20 on sale.

The 150 versus 200 PSI problem

HornBlasters’ pressure guide says the best pressure for most of its air and train horns is 150 PSI, and it had the Shocker XL third-party tested at 100, 150, and 200 PSI. The horns were loudest at 150, not 200. The same guide notes most large horn kits use a 110-145 PSI pressure switch and a 175 PSI safety blow-off, which tells you what pressure those valves and diaphragms were built around.

So if your suspension tank sits at 200 PSI, you have three ways to handle it:

  1. Turn the management system down. On an Air Lift 3P, leaving the default 150 PSI setting solves the problem for free. The cost is fewer lifts per tank and a slower feel on big height changes, since the manifold has less pressure differential to work with.
  2. Regulate only the horn branch. Viair’s 90150 in-line regulator adjusts from 0 to 220 PSI, has a 1/4” NPT inlet with dual 1/4” NPT outlets and a 0-220 PSI gauge, and lists at $52.50. Put it between the tank and the horn valve, dial it to 150, and the suspension keeps its full 200. The 1/4” ports are a flow restriction for a big four-trumpet horn, so this works best on compact horns or when the regulator feeds a short 1/2” line.   3. Swap the pressure switch. Air Lift sells a 145-175 PSI switch (part 24575, 1/8” MNPT, $50.99) that it recommends only for Viair 380C and 480C compressors. That lands the tank in a range both the horn and the bags can live with.

Going the other direction, running suspension off a 150 PSI horn kit, has its own rule from the HornBlasters FAQ: some onboard-air components handle 200 PSI and some do not, so confirm both the compressor and tank are rated for it before turning anything up.

Ports, fittings, and line size

Train horns are flow-hungry. The Shocker XL install manual calls for 1/2” air line from the tank to the valve inlet, using 1/2” male NPT to 1/2” push-to-connect fittings, and HornBlasters’ 5-gallon Conductor’s Special kit ships a 1/2” NPT electric valve. That is why the forum advice about 3/8” or 1/2” ports matters: a horn fed through a 1/4” port sounds thin and short no matter how big the tank is.

On an AccuAir ENDO-VT, the single 1/2” port is your horn port. On an Air Lift 3P tank, measure the port threads before ordering. Its brass 1/4” NPT run tee turns one 1/4” female port into two and costs $8.99. Use the tee on the suspension or gauge side and leave the largest port for the horn, not the other way around. Install order:

  1. Bleed the tank to zero and disconnect the compressor power before opening any port.
  2. Pick the largest free port that will not collect condensation. The Shocker XL manual specifically says to choose ports so water cannot drain into the valve or gauge.
  3. Thread the valve or tank fitting with a proper sealant. AccuAir includes Loctite 565 with the VU4 for exactly this reason.
  4. Run 1/2” line to the horn valve, then the short run from valve to the horn manifold.
  5. Wire the valve through a relay off a fused feed. Our relay wiring guide shows the layout.
  6. Refill and leak-check every joint with soapy water, then let it sit pressurized overnight, the same test HornBlasters prescribes for its bag integrations.

What a long blast does to your ride height

Numbers from HornBlasters’ current 5-gallon Conductor’s Special kit put this in perspective. At 150 PSI it delivers 10-12 seconds of honk time, the compressor restarts at 110 PSI, and refilling from 110 to 150 takes about 2 minutes. A single long blast can pull a 5-gallon tank from full to the compressor’s kick-on point.

Your suspension manifold only cares whether tank pressure is still comfortably above bag pressure, because that difference is what lifts the car. Drain the tank close to bag pressure and the next lift command does nothing until the compressor catches up. At high pressure that catch-up is slow: HornBlasters’ spec page for the Viair 444C found in Air Lift 3P kits lists 0.43 CFM at 200 PSI and 2 minutes 50 seconds to bring a 5-gallon tank from 165 back to 200 PSI.

  • Use short blasts on a shared tank. Two seconds warns a driver; ten seconds can empty the reserve the manifold needs for the next lift.
  • Bigger reserve fixes most of it. If you want long honks and instant lifts, add a second air tank rather than fighting over one.
  • Mind duty cycle. The 444C is a 100 percent duty compressor at 100 PSI but only 50 percent at 200 PSI, so a horn habit at 200 PSI means more compressor rest time.

Check valves and moisture on a shared system

Onboard-air compressors already carry a check valve between the compressor and the tank (Viair’s 480C, for example, ships with one on its braided leader hose), and the horn’s electric valve is normally closed, so a horn tap does not need its own check valve to keep the tank from bleeding back. Where a train horn check valve earns its keep is when you add a second tank dedicated to the horn and want the suspension reserve isolated from horn draw.

Moisture is the bigger shared-system risk. AccuAir ties its VU4 warranty to a water trap ahead of the manifold, and the horn valve is just as unhappy with water. A single trap or dryer on the tank outlet protects both, which we cover in the water trap and air dryer guide.

Shopping list for the tap

A typical Air Lift or AccuAir tap needs:

  • The horn itself. The Shocker XL, at 147.7 dB actual, is the four-trumpet unit HornBlasters tested at 150 PSI, and you can read our Shocker XL review for size and mounting notes.
  • A 1/2” NPT electric air valve if the horn was sold bare.
  • 1/2” air line and 1/2” NPT-to-PTC fittings for the tank-to-valve run.
  • A 1/4” NPT run tee if the tank has no free port.
  • A Viair 90150 regulator if you are keeping the tank at 200 PSI.
  • A relay, fuse, and momentary button or horn-ring tap for the valve.
  • Do not feed a four-trumpet horn through a 1/4” tee and expect full volume.
  • Do not run a 150 PSI horn on a 200 PSI tank without regulating or lowering pressure.
  • Do not skip the overnight leak test. On a shared tank a slow leak means a compressor running all night and a car sitting low by morning.
